Oil Painting Tips – Learn How to Keep your Colors Pure

One of the biggest hurdles for beginner oil painters is learning how to keep colors pure. How many times have you started an oil painting only to quit from frustration because things just didn’t look right. Your colors were muddy or they just lacked brilliance. This is a very common problem for artists just starting out with oil paints. Hopefully after reading this article, you will no longer have to put up with this frustration any longer and will finally be able to enjoy oil painting.

BE CLEAN AND ORGANIZED

I know for some of us, it can be very difficult to maintain a clean and organized painting environment. Sometimes we can get very caught up in our work and things can get sloppy. The last thing you want is to become a sloppy painter as your work will suffer. Break the habit early and try your hardest to develop clean and organized painting habits.

Your Palette

First, you should get into the habit of laying out your colors the same way every time you paint. This is just good practice and keeps the painting process flowing nicely. Arrange your colors along the edges of your palette leaving a lot of room in the center for mixing.

Don’t be afraid to squeeze out a good amount of paint, especially your whites. You will be more productive if you aren’t continuously stopping to squeeze out more paint.

Make certain to include all of the colors you think you will need to complete that session of painting. Again, this will make you more productive.

When adding paint to the palette, I have found that squeezing the paint out in long lines, as opposed to puddles, keeps my colors cleaner. When you have puddles of paint, they tend to get soiled by other colors when mixing. With a long line of paint, you can just take paint from the end as needed and not dirty the rest. Keep some rags or paper towels handy for wiping your palette knife clean.

It’s a good idea to continuously wipe your palette clean during the painting process. There is nothing more frustrating then trying to remove dried up oil paint. Keep some alcohol handy so that you can keep the mixing area of your palette clean.

If you don’t want to fuss around with a regular palette, why not try a disposable one? They are basically paper with a plastic coating that prevents the paper from absorbing the oil. The beauty of the disposable palette, is that you can simply throw it in the trash when you are done. Using a disposable palette will definitely help keep your colors clean as you will be starting with a clean surface every time you start a new painting session.

When mixing your colors, use your palette knife and not your brush. A palette knife can be wiped completely clean so there is no chance of your colors becoming contaminated. Your brush is made for painting and not mixing and you can shorten the life span of your brush if you are continually mixing with it.

Brushes

I like to have a handful of clean brushes near by when I am painting. This way, I do not need to stop and clean my brushes when I am working with a different color and there is less risk of the wrong colors getting into the mix.

SATURATION OR BRILLIANCE OF COLOR

When a color is squeezed straight from the tube, it is said to be high in saturation or brilliance. This is because it hasn’t been mixed with any other colors. The more colors you mix together, the duller they will become. It has been said that one should not mix more than three colors together and this a very good rule to follow. If you mix more than three colors together you are kind of defeating the purpose.

Why is this so? Let’s say that you are going to mix a brown. You decide to use red, yellow and blue to create your brown. You then decide to mix in a bit of orange. As you know, red mixed with yellow will create orange. So there is no need to add the additional color.

No one ever said it is a sin to use color straight from the tube. If you are painting something that calls for brighter color, why not use paint straight from the tube without mixing. Sometimes we get so accustomed to mixing color, that we neglect the pure color that is right in front of us. When using pure color though, try not to over do it. Too many bright colors can create havoc in a painting. Try and add bright colors against a duller surrounding so that your bright colors really stand out.

LIGHTEN OR DARKEN WITH COLOR

What is it that most of us do when we want to change the value of a color? To lighten a color, we usually add white and to darken a color we use black. You should always look for the opportunity to use color to change the value instead of black and white. Adding white or black to color will diminish its brilliance, unless that is the effect you are shooting for. A great example of this is using Yellow Ochre. If you want to brighten and lighten this color, instead of adding white, try adding a little Cadmium Yellow Light.

I hope this article has given you a little more insight into keeping your colors pure. Remember to practice oil painting as often as possible and never give up, no matter how frustrated you get!

Antique Jewelry – Investment and Fashion

There are two major reasons for purchasing antique jewelry: as an investment and for fashion. While the term ‘fashionable antiques’ might appear to be an oxymoron, the wearing of old but tasteful jewelry has always been regarded as both fashionable and acceptable in society, and in fact a study of antique jewelry down the ages can tell a lot about the history and culture of a country.

The purpose of jewelry was originally to adorn ourselves, and then became a symbol of status. The ability to afford rare and expensive gems and metals was displayed publicly by wearing them on one’s person. “Look at me: I am richer than you!”

As design became increasingly important, the famous jewelry houses and designers such as Fabergé, Tiffany and Cartier were born from their unique design capabilities, but as the 20th century came along, design became secondary to setting as many diamonds as possible in a piece to increase its actual raw material cost as opposed to its perceived value.

It is doubtful if today’s jewelry will ever become as sought after as that of the great fashion houses and jewelers, and now is the time to purchase antique jewelry for investment because, as it is snapped up and placed in collections, there appears little capable of taking its place. There is still a lot of antique jewelry to be found in antique shops, and even on eBay you will see many fine pieces selling at affordable prices.

It is still worn, of course, although yesterday’s fine pieces do not always fit with today’s clothes fashions. Nevertheless, as taste is replaced by price, this is less important a factor than it once was, and the days appear to be over when jewelry was designed to suit particular styles of clothing and fabrics. Today, anything goes as long as it is bright, glittering and expensive. In many ways, “Bling” has superseded taste and sensitive design.

So, what should you be looking for when purchasing antique jewelry – whether it is for investment or fashion? First check the symmetry of the piece. True antiques are not symmetrical: they are hand-made and each side is slightly different than the other. You can also tell a lot from the fastenings, because barrel clasps are modern, as are post and clip and clip-back earring fastenings (1930s at earliest). An antique will be smooth to the feel, and have no jaggy edges that catch on your hands and clothing.

Platinum and white gold were not used until the 20th century, and earlier 19th century jewelry was made of silver, although gold was used. Also keep in mind that gemstone cutting machines were not used until the mid 19th century, so any modern cut was not possible until then, the elongated baguette cut being introduced in the art deco and art nouveaux pieces of the 1920s.

If you intend purchasing antique jewelry for investment, therefore, it will pay to learn about the subject. Either that or never purchase a piece until it has been checked by an expert. Fashion, on the other hand, is a different thing entirely. While real antique jewelry prices can be set by the piece itself, the value of fashion jewelry is largely set by trends rather than intrinsic value.

Art deco jewelry, art nouveaux, retro – name it what you will, but a large proportion of jewelry designed and produced under these labels had little real value, and some even less in terms of design. To take a corollary with furniture, the ‘in’ furniture style of the 1950s and early 1960’s, ‘G-Plan’ had no mitigating features other than that it was different, and so became the furniture fashion statement of its era. Although it is now enjoying a resurgence under the label of ‘retro’, G-Plan will never be regarded as antique, irrespective of how old it is.

That is as true as the fact that you could never imagine true antiques being referred to as ‘retro’, yet the term can be, and has been applied to the art deco jewelry designs of the 1920s. Whether these designs will ever become fashionable again is another question, but it does raise a question as to antique jewelry and its place in fashion vis a vis that acquired for investment.

Would an art deco piece of jewelry be purchased as a fashion item? Not at the moment, but perhaps as costume jewelry. Would it be acquired as an investment? Doubtful! Can the same be said of art nouveaux? And what else? So where does fashion end and investment begin, or is there no defining line, and do people purchase the jewelry that appeals to them rather than for its projected future value?

One thing is certain. Real antique jewelry has a part to play in the worlds of fashion and of investment, and it is wise to take expert advice prior to parting with your money irrespective of your purpose in buying it. However, would you wear your investment? Only you will know that, and even then only when the time comes to choose – or to show off!

4 Must Haves for Your Next Tailgating Season

Although summertime is still in full swing, football tailgating season is clearly on the horizon. The first game in the college football season is coming right up, and that means that hundreds of thousands of sports fans will be heading to the big game soon with a cooler full of meat, a bag of charcoal and the best of intentions. Experienced tailgaters know about the essentials they must have with them for a successful day, but first timers will likely make a few mistakes along the way. Here are four things that every tailgater must have to make their morning/afternoon/evening one to remember.
Shelter
This one applies in the heat of a late August afternoon and during a sleet storm in late December. If you want around the tailgating lot, you will notice that the happiest, most content looking tailgaters are the ones that brought shelter. Many folks don’t want to make the initial investment, but many stores sell tent-like shelters for under $50, so if you are going to be out there every week, it is a worthwhile buy. Since most stadiums don’t have shaded seating, you don’t want to tailgate for three or four hours before the game and then sit for three more out in the direct sun (or the direct elements). It just won’t result in a fun day.
Entertainment
The great thing about tailgating during football season is that there are always a slew of other games going on at the same time. Back in the olden days, most of us simply listened to whatever other games were on the radio, but now, having a cheap generator that allows you to plug in a television is possible, although being able to see the screen can be a bit of a challenge without the aid of the shelter mentioned above. Many people even bring along their DirecTV dish and use that, although a simpler setup will get you broadcast stations, which usually means other games.
More Entertainment
Every tailgating lot is different. Some provide ample space for people to run around and throw a football and some don’t. If you are literally packed in like sardines, bring along a deck of cards, a board game or some other form of entertainment to pass the time. If you have room, bring a football, a baseball and gloves or something that a group of people can do that gets you active. The worst tailgate is a boring one.
Patience
We spend an obscene amount of our lives waiting around to do things. No matter how many times you’ve gone to the big game before, on the days where you tailgate (and have been looking forward to it all week), the traffic will cause you to be late. The entertainment mentioned above is also a good idea after the game is finished as the rush of cars to leave causes yet another traffic jam. Relax, thank you lucky stars you were able to spend a Saturday or Sunday out at the game, and have another burger. Next weekend will be here before you know it.
The consummate tailgater is always looking for ways to improve his game and no grill offers more options, more excitement and more versatility than the Freedom Grill FG-50! Better Balance, Better Surfer

surferSimple exercises to help improve your balance

By Clayton Beatty
www.totalsurfingfitness.com

Have you ever been watching a surf DVD and you see some pro bust off the lip, land on some awkward angle with his body bent backwards into the white-wash and yet some how he recovers and manages to stay on his board.

Don’t you wish you could do that? That sort of recovery requires an insanely high level of core strength and balance. Lucky for us, you can actually train to increase your balance and in turn improve your surfing.

The following exercises will help you improve your core strength and balance so you can make more waves, perform better tricks and wipe out less.

One-Leg Stability Ball Split Squat

There are two important components when it comes to surfing balance. The first of these is strong and stable leg muscles. Training your legs in isolation will iron out any weaknesses you may have in your leg and hip muscles and decrease the chance of injury.

The second component is core stability. This refers to keeping your body stable when other forces are trying to knock you down.

This exercise is a perfect combination to train leg strength and core stability at the same time.

  • Start with your front foot forward and your back foot elevated on top of a stability ball.
  • Keeping your body upright, lower your torso towards the ground, then use the strength in your front leg to push you back up to the start position.
  • Your front leg should be far enough forward that your knee should not extend past your toe when you squat.
  • Do 3 sets of 8 repetitions each leg with a minutes rest between sets.
  • Once you have mastered this exercise using only your bodyweight, hold some dumbbells in each hand.

Stability Ball Balance

This second exercise trains core stability specifically. The stability ball mimics the unpredictability of the ocean. In order to stay on the ball (your surfboard) you need to maintain your balance by using the core muscles of your abdominals, lower back and hips.

  • First of all try balancing on both knees on top of a stability ball.
  • Balance for 30 seconds and repeat 2 more times.
  • Once you have mastered this try balancing on one foot and one knee.
  • Do 3 sets of 30 second balances.

Once you can comfortably balance on a stability ball, you are on your way to having excellent core stability and balance. However there are a lot more exercises that you can do whilst balancing on the ball which will dramatically help your surfing ability.

    SOME GOOD BASS FISHING TIPS

Bass go for cover when it’s sunny, and scatter when it is cloudy. When the sun is shining, it can be expected that fish will come and bite when the lure is close to cover. This is not true for cloudy days, when they can bite anywhere.
During autumn, cast your bait down stream. This should yield better results.
In the Spring, position yourself in shallow waters, cast deep upstream, and use a 1/8 ounce weight.
The ideal time for bass fishing is in the early hours of the morning, or late in the evening. These are the times when bass are on the feed. However, on cloudy days or in muddy water, bass will come out to feed in mid afternoon.
Check the surface of the water. If it’s covered with moss, try a scent – which can serve to penetrate through the thick cover.
There is no need for flashy colors when choosing a jig. Use only the basics, such as brownish black, or blue black.
Ideally, your worm should be suspended ninety percent of the time.
For good results, always make sure that your hooks are sharpened. While you’re at it, check your knot on a regular basis; make sure it is tied tightly.
It is important to learn to shake your bait, instead of dragging it. What this does is make the bass think that it is actually live bait.
For better setting of the hook, tighten your drag.
Although it is economical to buy in bulk, worms or tubes bought in large quantities can get smelly, even in open spaces. Keep them sealed in smaller bags, like those you buy for food storage. It is important that large mouth bass bait are stored airtight, to preserve freshness. This way, they can be kept anywhere for long periods of time. Note, our Walking Worms come in small bags of 8.
Planning is everything. Your bass fishing trip should begin before you even reach the water. Make sure you formulate a plan. After executing that plan for an hour or two, see if it is working, and contemplate moving on to “plan B” if it is not. Pay attention to your instincts.
Even if you have a favorite place to fish a “hot spot”, be sure to try new spots often.
It is important to study a lake map and think about the season you’re in, and consider weather conditions each time you go out to fish. Even if you are fishing on a very familiar lake, it is always important to investigate. This way, you may find a great fishing spot that you may have previously missed. A computer or various websites can also help you discern water levels, forecasts, and wind conditions.
Don’t give up just because a bass short strikes behind your top water bait, and you don’t connect with it. Simply cast different bait, quickly, and try again.
Try something smaller if you have been using larger lures and have only been getting a few nips and non-producing bites. In this sport, bigger doesn’t always mean better.
When fishing a stump, it is important to think about the root system. This is surprising to some people, but the roots might hold more fish than the main part of the stump itself.
When going after large fish in a lake, it is best to use strong, sturdy rods. The food in a lake is plentiful and rich, so expect to see fish weighing upwards of twelve pounds each. Lake fish can be many times bigger than those found in ponds and streams.
It is a known fact that Bass are smarter then many other types of fish. They are going to try to do whatever it takes to rid themselves of that hook, so it is best to be prepared. To keep your catch on the hook, the best thing a fisherman can do is keep the fish in the water. Hold your rod with the tip pointed down, angled towards the water. Bring the fish this way as close to shore as possible, then onto dry land. Once on dry land, it will be easier to concentrate on getting the hook out of the fish’s mouth. The same principle works with boats as well. As soon as you can, scoop him in the net, and bring the fish out of the water and on to the boat.
Before you release your bass, take a look inside of its mouth. Often, while fighting a lure in its jaw a fish will try and throw up the contents of its stomach. By looking at this, you might be able to determine what food the fish are actively eating, and then choose a lure that will duplicate that.
When using light lines or small hooks, make sure that you use a quality reel one with a smooth drag system to protect again sudden surges by a fighting bass.
On a regular basis, check your line right above the lure. Rocks, gravel, stumps, and other obstructions can quickly fray your line.

    Deadly Golf Swing…

You’ve got your ball teed, your distance calculated and your shot all lined up. Mentally, you imagine the perfect follow-through and
force as you swing through to connect with the ball.

As your club comes down, though, something goes horribly wrong. You chip the ball off in some unintended direction, or swing over it entirely…what just happened?

More than likely, what happened is you moved your head at the last second and, by force of habit, also dropped your shoulder at the top of your swing.

This is deadly to your swing!

But how do you train yourself out of doing this? Even slight movements from correct posture can affect your swing, and it is not always easy to detect them.

Try this exercise the next time you’re out practicing:

    1. Lift your club straight out in front of you with both hands so that it is near forehead level. This is where your club should be at the top swing. Notice the position of your shoulders?

    2. Now, try to keep the ball sighted by focusing your eyes downward, and maintaining only the slightest tilt of your head. The goal here is to keep the ball in sight without tilting your head all the way down to look at it.

    3. Practice your swing very slowly, keep your head level and eye steady on the ball, as you bring the club down and in front of you into the correct top swing position.

Rinse and repeat as need, until you’ve burned the procedure into “muscle memory.” I think you’ll see a noticeable improvement in your swing from this exercise in a very short time!

Fish for Bass With a Walking Worm

One of the most effective and exciting means of catching bass is the walking worm. walking worms are typically five to seven inches long and mimic an earth worm with a slender back section ending with a paddle tail.
The line should be at least eight pound test. Tie the hook using a clinch knot. Pass the tag or loose end of the line through the eye of the hook. Twist the loose end around the main line six or seven times and then pass the tag end back through the small loop formed above the eye of the hook. Moisten the knot and pull it tight.

Place the walking worm on the hook using a Texas rigging. Place the top or fat end of the walking worm next to the point of the hook. Make sure the flat side of the worm is next to the hook. Push the point of the hook down through the top of the worm and through the center of the body for about half an inch. Push the point of the hook out through the flat side of the worm and slide the worm up past the turn in the shank of the hook.

Turn the hook back toward the worm and push the worm up slightly so there is excess plastic above the point. Push the point through the worm and out the other side. Straighten the worm and slightly insert the point into the worm body.

Cast the worm near a structure such as a dock, rocks, brush or a wall. Allow the worm to settle, which may take several moments as the worm is fished with no weight. Once the worm reaches the bottom, allow it to move with the currents of the water.

Begin to retrieve the walking worm by raising the tip of the rod. Repeat the motion two or three times which will result in a ticking or bouncing motion. Reel the worm a few feet and stop which will allow the worm to settle to the bottom once again.

Repeat the motion until the worm is completely retrieved. Recast the walking worm, paying particular attention to areas of small cover where a bass may be lying in wait. Remember to keep the slack of the line reeled in, as this will make setting a hook much easier. Allow the fish to take the bait before attempting to set the hook.
    Tips & Warnings

There are many different colors of walking worms available. Try using alternating colors when fish seem to turn off or stop biting. It may also be advantageous to use different colors at different times of year or even day.

Use caution when rigging the worm Texas style. It is possible to push the point of the hook into a thumb or finger. Once the barb penetrates the skin is becomes very difficult to remove hooks.

    Thailand’s Lake Monster

The 7-acre (2.8-hectare) lake is one of several created in recent years near Bangkok for anglers who want to hook some of the world’s most exotic fish.
Lake Monster alone boasts roughly two dozen types of freshwater fish, many of them threatened with extinction.
This is allowing anglers to catch rare species without having to go into the wild and try to remove a very rare fish from its natural habitat.
People want to come and fish for these big fish, especially because many of these exotic species are new for Asia,” Parnitpechedpong said.
Lake Monster is now a haven for the Mekong giant catfish, a Southeast Asian beast that has seen its wild population drop by about 95 percent over the past century.
At 9 feet long and 646 pounds a Mekong giant catfish currently holds the record for the largest freshwater fish ever caught .Lake Monster also hosts alligator gar, which can grow as long as 10 feet and weigh 300 pounds .
These North American giants are not listed as endangered, but habitat loss and overfishing have taken a toll on the species’ preferred spawning habitats, contributing to significant population declines.

    Giant Fish Helped by Fishing?

    Striped Bass Fishing

Striped bass fishing is one of the many types of bass fishing that has become very popular.Fishing for these incredible fish is both challenging and fun. Being that there is such a broad realm within the bass community, striped bass is in a category all its own.
Today we are going to discuss how you can get involved with this incredible opportunity and join the many enthusiastic anglers that have already been bitten by the bass bug.
Striped bass are most often called stripers and also rockfish because they can be frequently found in rocky areas that offer shelter and protection. There are several ways to catch these fish such as by casting, trolling and even bottom fishing. In most areas, stripers do not reproduce well requiring extensive game management and stocking. The best months for catching this game fish are late March through May. This is because striped bass begin to feed aggressively as they prepare to spawn.
Bait – Finding and using the right type of bait for stripers is the same as any other type of fishing. The more experienced striped bass fisherman will spend a lot of time looking for schools of baitfish. They know that when they find these schools that the fish will be very close by.
Casting or trolling with large plugs or fishing live bait under a bobber are all techniques that I have used when fishing for these animals. Chicken liver, normally a great bait for cat fishing, has been a proven good choice as natural bait. The most effective artificial baits, in my experience, are spoons and rattle traps. Live shad are the bait of choice when using live bait because they are the primary forage food for stripers.
Tackle – You need to know the difference types of tackle used for striped bass fishing just as you need to know the types of tackle used for any other game fish. Fishermen use a variety of tackle and methods to catch these hard fighting fish. Some who enjoy the fight may use light tackle while others who prefer to put food on the table will use heavier tackle. In my case, I usually go with the heavier tackle because these bass are some of the biggest game fish out there reaching weights of over seventy pounds.
When it comes to bass fishing, striped bass fishing is one of the favorites for many and you can also find yourself hooked by this incredible experience. There is just no way to describe the exhilaration you feel when you hook into one of these monsters and you discover that you are in for the fight of your life. Good luck to you on your next fishing adventure.
